To exploit or to explore
This dilemma is a classic choice when it comes to seeking new experiences or delving deeper into the information already available. Generally speaking, there must always be a balance – both in the running of businesses and in personal development – between innovating and optimising what is already known.
When planning our activities within the Medes Islands Natural Park and Strict Nature Reserve – whether from the perspective of the centre, the diving club or the divers themselves – we recognise that this balance between making the most of what we know and exploring the new is essential to achieving our objectives: to have fun, to respect the environment and to learn.
Relying on a single well-known attraction, such as the Medes Islands, presents numerous limitations and is an unsustainable practice. Some of the visitors we welcome arrive with preconceived ideas, shaped by all this prior information or by their own experience, and seek only what they already know, time and time again, as if in an automatic and unconscious repetition of what once captivated them.
We believe that one must be fully prepared in every respect to make the most of these wonders, the abundance of fish, the diversity of habitats and their worldwide reputation as a diving destination.
On the other hand, there is the person who has only just started out in this world. At first, they are bombarded with a huge amount of information, which usually generates a great deal of satisfaction and interest until – generally influenced by other divers – they tend to become part of that group of divers we were talking about a moment ago.
When diving in the Natural Park, we must strike a balance between learning new things every day and what we have already seen. New information enables us to understand the sea better, respect it more and, ultimately, love it. Learning and preparation can be achieved, for example, through environmentally responsible diving techniques. But they can also relate to different dive sites, marine biology and species, or the characteristics of various underwater habitats. We can also carry out studies on the evolution of the park and its species.
The Malica project is a journey into the exploration of new ideas, with the aim of sustainably making the most of what this exceptional area has to offer.
